The power of hope

May 25, 2014

It has been a long, tough grind in the Ukraine. For centuries, it has been the mistreated stepchild of bigger and more powerful neighbors: Poland, Turkey, Russia, Germany. Everybody in the neighborhood has had their way with poor old Ukraine at one time or another.

Finally, after such a long time of suffering, maybe, just maybe, they can be free. And, dare to hope, even gain the level of prosperity of their neighbor to the East, Poland. Yes, it has gotten to the point where Ukrainians dream of having the level of prosperity of poor old Poland. It’s that bad. Hell, some of them dream of being as successful as Russia: you know you have hit rock bottom when you are jealous of that poor, suffering nation. But the reality is that the economy of the Ukraine is worse than either one. Wow.

Best of luck, Ukraine. The whole world is hoping that this can be a fresh start on a better life. They have begun by electing a pro-Western leader who wants to help his country be prosperous. It’s a good start.
