The future of Venice
There is a small, abandoned island for sale near the heart of Venice. A citizens’ group is competing with an anonymous corporate bidder to buy it. The citizen’s group wants to turn it into a public park. The corporation reportedly wants to turn it into an amusement park, like Disneyland. Nothing could be more cheesy. This touches upon the sensitive issue of how much development is good for Venice. Twenty million tourists come each year. The population of the city center has dropped to less than 60,000. The questions of how much of Venice should be reserved for wealthy tourists is a legitimate one.
