Mediation and the art of drumming
Strangely, I have found playing the drum set to be oddly meditative. I am working on keeping a steady beat to a metronome while “playing time”. Then, every fourth bar, I hit a “fill”, the fancy flourish drummers use between musical phrases. I have ten I work on, and I try to go around them one after the other every fourth bar. I try to do this from memory, if possible. Sometimes I can coordinate it, sometimes not, depending on the speed I am trying to play and the complexity of the fill.
It is very much a form of focused mediation. It’s tiring, because it takes lots of concentration, but it is very fun.
