God help the Ukraine
The Ukraine has descended into near anarchy and civil war. Read the sad news here:
It is hard to describe the feeling of being in the Ukraine. It is a beautiful place. Yeah, the service sucks and the people are pretty unfriendly. But it has the most amazing museum of Russian art imaginable. The subway is pretty amazing. It is a place where a choir sings on the streets for tips. You can go work out at an outdoor weightlifting gym on a beautiful island for free. It is the kind of place where two teenage girls in glittering bikinis suddenly started dancing in a kiddie pool right next to a heavily traveled street full of cars at 1:00 pm on a Friday, motivated apparently by nothing more than some music and vodka, like the most bizarre music video come to life.
It is so strange to read in the newspaper about barricades, makeshift morgues, shootouts, arson, all on pavement that I was standing on for weeks in August and September of 2011. I pray for that poor country. It has suffered so much already. The Ukraine is filled with the ghosts of miseries past. No more. I hope this horrible situation ends, soon.
