My little boys learn about babies and, um, death

April 24, 2013

One of our pet rabbits, Greystone, gave birth to a litter of babies. E.B is the father.

She had seven tiny little babies. Their eyes are closed and they can barely wiggle. My little 9 and 10 year old boys were very excited and happy.

Unfortunately, reality frequently doesn’t stick to the script of Disney movies. Poor Greystone just seemed at a loss for what to do. Four of them died the first day. She was apparently not caring for them. It was her first litter. Maybe she wasn’t producing milk. Maybe the stress of confinement was affecting her. It’s hard to say.

Today my wife finally intervened. She made a next for the babies so they would stay warm and fed them a little goat’s milk. What nature will not handle, she will try to do.

This has been fascinating and very involving for the boys. They are paying very close attention to this whole process.

  1. Awe, thank you honey. I can’t bare to stand by and watch them one by one pass. Momma left them out in the cold I stead of in the nest we provides her so…. In they came today and for a little while. They are so tiny and helpless…. Living breathing with hearts beating. Totally depending on someone else at this point. Lets see how tonight goes. Bringing mommy in for the nights so she can try and feed her babies. If by tomorrow again they aren’t fed I’ll give them some more goat milk.

It is so sad to witness the helpless little creatures struggle to survive. Thanks, Michelle, for trying your best to save them. It is hard to know what to do. Food and warmth sound like good starts. I look forward to hearing about their progress.
